Children in Cornwall give it some welly
Children across West Cornwall left their shoes at home on Friday and wore Wellington boots to school instead.
They were taking part in Wellies Day to raise money for the Children's Hospice South West's Precious Lives Appeal. At Treloweth School, at Illogan, children wore brightly coloured wellies, some with spots, some striped and some with pink hearts. The event, which was raised by the school council, raised more than £100.
At St Piran's School, Hayle, staff and pupils threw themselves in to the event with great enthusiasm. The previous day they had had a talk on the work of CHSW by fundraiser Mary Murfin, so that they knew exactly why they were raising money. They collected more than £90.
At Connor Downs School, around two-thirds of the children and all the staff wore wellies for the day. Head teacher Allan Lawrence said: "Each year we chose a charity to support, a charity that helps children. This year we chose Children's Hospice South West and all the money we raise this year will go to them." Pupils were charged 50p to wear their wellies to school raising around £50.
